every tree an exile
from the moment its seed
descends, lands somewhere,
sends down roots
to grow in that place
for decades or even centuries
and we who can lift our feet
and place them down
where we please
on our pilgrimage,
what if one of us
encounters a particular tree
on a rare warm night
in an October field
a fat hunter’s moon
crossing cloudless sky,
and on this still night
one might choose
to lie down
in soft grasses
encircling the trunk
share its space
through the night
watching the far sparse stars
framed by branches
air and breath
the only movement
until there grows
a gradual awareness
from within the earth
deep in the roots
a welling toward
the moon
from the moment its seed
descends, lands somewhere,
sends down roots
to grow in that place
for decades or even centuries
and we who can lift our feet
and place them down
where we please
on our pilgrimage,
