The morning Orioles wake us
with their orange song and shake
the pear tree’s white blossoms.
Cool dawn glows pink on the neighbor’s house
for five whole minutes and then goes white
while I list the thousand ways I have been wronged,
blessed. Will I ever get up from this
warm bed and drink the morning that’s been given me?
That our memory is not useless
becomes a sort of prayer –
the lilacs will bloom again.
The song heard is fragrance as well as word.
