About the text

On October 17, 1950, Protection from the Atomic Bomb was first released to an unsuspecting public, tired of war and just entering into another, anxious about the real effects radiation had on humans (like X-rays, the booklet declares).

Paul Dever, then Governor of Massachusetts authorized the Civil Defense Agency and scientists and doctors from MIT, Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital to write and design a booklet to help the citizens of the Commonwealth.

John Stokes, then Director of Civil Defense, wrote: “We must face the fact that any bombing attack can cause dreadful destruction and loss of life. Radiation from an A-bomb cannot be overlooked, but it is the least of its three terrible effects.”

IF YOU HAVE HAD NO WARNING IN AN A-BOMB ATTACK
WHEN YOU SEE A FLASH OF LIGHT BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN —

Don’t run: there isn’t time.

Fall flat on your face.

GET DOWN FAST!
IF A BOMB GOES OFF IN THE AIR

its radiation danger is over in a minute.

IF IT EXPLODES AT GROUND LEVEL OR UNDER WATER

radiation danger may linger for hours. That is why you need to stay indoors until it is safe to go out

Of the three ways in which the A-Bomb can hurt you,

RADIATION IS THE LEAST HARMFUL.
