Girl Poetry

Heidi Blakeslee

they probably
think

oh, girl poetry,
great
it'll be another one
about flowers
or kissing
or periods
or vaginas
or staring longingly at someone

but in reality
we write about
the streets

freedom to speak
spoken words that ripple
through cool air
like bullets

women write hard
against the spite

spines of books creased
from heavy reading
heavy petting
not mentioned
here

women write about whatever shit
is real
that's why
when a woman reads
a good poem
there is a whoosh of silence
at the end

a skipped second
where everyone is forced
to say

damn
